IELTS Reading Time Management: You Are Not Supposed to Read Every Word
IELTS Reading is not a test of reading every sentence slowly. It is a test of locating information, understanding paraphrase, and making decisions under time pressure.
Many students lose time because they read the passage before they understand the task. Start with the question type and the keywords.
The passage rarely repeats the same words. You must expect synonyms, changed grammar, and opposite phrasing.
What to practise
- Preview the question type before reading.
- Underline names, dates, numbers, and strong nouns.
- Expect paraphrase, not exact repetition.
- Review wrong answers by trap type.
